Mainly, we’re lobstering because its fun and we like projects.
I have always wanted to do it, and now that I own a boat, I can.
The early stages of preparation have been messy and difficult, and economically, thus far, it makes no sense. I think we’re going to have to catch somewhere in the order of 90 lobsters this summer to recoup the investment and ongoing costs, so even though lobsters are relatively expensive, this is not a cheaper way to put them on your plate. Lobsters caught under a non commercial license cannot be sold.
In addition, we’re interested to see how much we can improve our yield over the course of the season, without the benefit of knowledge from a seasoned pro and the journeyman process that a commercial lobsterman would traditionally go through.
So we’re out there to have fun and enjoy summer in Maine and to learn how to do it.
